Danish Gambling Authority (DGA)
In the twenty first century, online wagering has become the gambling means of choice for many players. This is the case throughout Europe, and, in fact, the rest of the world. As a response to this shift, the Danish Ministry of Taxation created the Danish Gambling Authority (DGA). The DGA’s purpose is to keep a watchful eye over all gambling activities, and to form rules that protect both providers and the players.
The Gambling Act was introduced by the Danish government in 2010. Its purpose is to protect the interests of gambling operators and their customers. This new ruling meant that Denmark became the most regulated country in Scandinavia when it comes to wagering. Because it was introduced so recently, the Gambling Act includes rules that are designed to protect all parties within online gaming.
The Gambling Act is designed to ensure that potential players who are deemed too young to indulge in wagering are not able to do so. It was also formed to address the issues faced by problem gamblers, and to help to prevent them from gambling in irresponsible ways that would be detrimental to their well-being. Consequently, the Danish government has strict laws in place regarding the marketing and advertising of wagering services, and does not permit aggressive campaigns.
Within the terms of the Gambling Act, online gambling is described as any wagering that is done via remote channels. Included in this legislation are providers that offer online sports betting, horse racing, poker, bingo and online casinos. In order for these providers to gain a licence to operate in Denmark, they must fulfil a number of obligations.
The first thing a provider must do to become licenced to operate in Denmark is send in a detailed application form along with a registration fee. Then, the authorities will conduct a background check, before ascertaining that the provider in question is in good financial standing.
The provider is obliged to sort out a Danish bank account that will be used solely for the purposes of their gaming business in Denmark. Then, they must prove that they are taking steps to prevent young people from being able to use their services, as well as protecting potential problem players.
