Four of the leading financial institutions in Ireland came together to create Laser Card Services Ltd., a non-profit organisation whose purpose was to produce the Laser debit card. These debit cards were launched in 1996; however, are no longer used, as they were withdrawn from use on the market in 2014. The reason for this is that the institutions behind the card began to favour and issue MasterCard and Visa debit cards instead.

It was in 2007 that financial institutions began favouring other debit cards and by 2011, National Irish Bank was left as the sole institution that still supported the Laser debit card. It’s believed that organisations were put off Laser debit card because the cards were sometimes known to encounter various problems when they were used to make online payments.
Despite there being some problems with the card, people did complain when it started getting replaced with others, mainly because they were so used to using the card. In fact, a number of businesses began charging people for using MasterCard and Visa debit cards, even though they hadn’t charged them for using Laser debit cards. An example of this is Betfair, which began charging players 1.5% commission on deposits they made using Visa debit cards, simply because they had replaced the Laser debit card. Had it not been for MasterCard and Visa, people in Ireland would probably still be using Laser debit card today. There were nearly 3 million Laser debit cards in use in 2010 and in 2009 over 195 million transactions were carried out using the cards.
When the Laser debit card was in use, it could be used for a variety of purposes: with it you could make payments online and over the phone and you could withdraw money from ATMs, deposit money at ATMs and pay your bills.
